A Conversation With Thomas Merton, Thomas Berry, and Pope Francis

To celebrate the Season of Creation, Corpus Christi Parish and the Thomas Merton Society host an afternoon of contemplative inquiry concerning the urgency of activating a robust Catholic commitment to care for our common home. Br. Kevin Cawley and Sr. Kathleen Deignan will animate a presentation and conversation about the current status of our Living Earth, addressing the environmental, political, moral, and spiritual features of our present ecological crisis. The conversation will be informed by the wisdom legacies of Thomas Berry and Thomas Merton, and the moral challenges of Pope Francis.

KEVIN CAWLEY, C.F.C., Ph.D., an Edmund Rice Christian Brother, is Executive Director of the Thomas Berry Forum for Ecological Dialogue at Iona College. He is editor and publisher of a monthly electronic newsletter on environmental concerns, The Carbon Rangers/Ecozoic Times and serves at the United Nations as the Main Representative of Edmund Rice International (ERI), a non-governmental organization working on behalf of young people and Care of the Earth. As a GreenFaith Fellow, he promotes the teachings of Laudato Si’ among communities of faith.
KATHLEEN DEIGNAN, C.N.D., Ph.D., of the Congregation of Notre Dame, and a GreenFaith Fellow, is on the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies at Iona College, where she directs the Deignan Institute for Earth and Spirit, a project that integrates three constituent endeavors: The Iona Spirituality Center, The Thomas Merton Contemplative Initiative, and The Thomas Berry Forum for Ecological Dialogue.
